Overhead Door Corporation was established in 1921 by C.G. Johnson with an intention to create an industry, not just to be a part of it. He developed the upward-lifting sectional garage door which smartly resolved the issues of space and weather associated with the conventional swinging “barn-style” doors. In 1926, he introduced the first-ever electric garage door opener. These ingenious inventions established the company’s name as the ultimate pioneer in access facilitation solutions.
Model T Tour: A Marketing Magic
In the times when digital marketing was a far off dream, Johnson went on the road. He mounted a miniature operational prototype of his sectional door at the back of his Ford Model T and journeyed across the USA. By displaying the mechanical wonder at county fairs and town squares, he built a reputation for reliability from the ground that has lasted over a century.
Strategic Growth & Genie Acquisition
With age, the company evolved from being a residential expert to a giant in the industrial sector.
Diversification: In the mid-1990s, the company introduced rolling steel doors and specialized sectional doors for the logistic and trucking sector.
The Dallas Corporation Era: In the 1980s, for a short time, the company renamed itself Dallas Corporation reflecting its wide industrial wings. However, the power of the mother brand was undeniable, and it soon returned to its roots as Overhead Door Corporation by the 1990s again.
Genie Acquisition (1994): Under the bold step to expand its footprint in the retail and DIY sector, Overhead Door went ahead and acquired The Genie Corporation. Here, while Overhead Door looked after the sector of being the “exclusive distributor”, Genie took charge of manufacturing products for retail consumers.
Modern Innovations & Sustainability
Overhead Door today is more than just a name in doors; it is a terminology in building science and digital technology integration.
Thermocore® Technology: It set a benchmark in the energy efficiency sector by unveiling its insulation lineup with high-R-value named Thermocore®. It helped in regulating temperatures in residential garage doors as well as massive warehouse and commercial complexes.
The Ribbon Distributorship: Unlike many in the fraternity, Overhead Door operates through its network of over 450 authorized “Ribbon” Distributors across North America, thus ensuring every installation is taken care of by a factory-trained expert.
OHD Anywhere®: In the times of smart homes, it launched its OHD Anywhere® app, where you could manage and monitor your garage doors right from your smartphone.
A Century of Trust
Today based in Lewisville, Texas and under the Sanwa Holdings Corporation umbrella (acquired in 1996), Overhead Door Corporation might operate globally, but still holds on to the grassroots promise of its founder: providing a secure, energy-efficient, and healthy access to spaces.
