Wireless keypads use a 10 key pad that uses a PIN number to open or close the garage door. They are usually attached to the outside of the garage for access. Before wireless technology these keypads were hard wired to the opener unit. If you have one of these keypads than they will always work with any opener because of the direct wiring. You just have to connect the keypad wires to the new opener and should work as before opener replacement. Wireless technology is a little different wireless frequencies change often when manufactures produce newer technology.

When you replace your opener it is probably 10-20 years old and they typically change the wireless technology every 5 years or so. So when your old keypad does not work with your new opener than the technology in the new unit is much different. These keypads can be more useful if you have multiple garage doors because the keypads can hold up to 25 different PIN numbers for 25 different opener units. The Genie brand keypads that have the words Intellicode on them are compatible with many different year models of openers. Also Craftsman and liftmaster keypads and remotes do not interchange frequency. Even though they are manufactured by the same company these frequencies are always different. Craftsman remotes and keypads do not work with Liftmaster openers and vice versa. Most of the time if you replace your opener you will most likely have to buy a new wireless keypad for the new opener. Keypads are great for people who like to walk or walk a dog without having to carry keys. Or have multiple kids or roommates that need access to home without having to worry about making multiple keys and worry about someone losing one. Or have a maid or nanny that you don’t want to provide a key. With a keypad PIN numbers can be erased in seconds and at no extra cost.
