What are the stem sizes of garage door rollers?

Residential garage door rollers come in 2 different stem sizes 4-inch and 7-inch long. Most all-common wood or steel garage doors will have 4-inch stems. Custom wood carriage style garage door will use a 7-inch stem because they use double hinges on the sides of the door for more strength because of the extra weight of a custom wood door. When you put two hinges next to each other you need the extra stem size to go thru both hinges. I have also seen some garage doors that have the longer 7-inch stems because if the garage door ever jumps cables it tends to go sideways and rollers will start to come out of the hinges and when the door loses the rollers when it is in the up position than it can completely crash down on a car. Anytime this happens to your garage door you should leave it alone and call a professional. If you try to deal with it yourself you can do further damage with increased repair cost.

4-inch to 11-inches

When it comes to commercial garage doors the stem sizes can range from 4-inch to 11-inches. They make 4,7, 7 ¼, 8 ½, 9, 10 and 11 inch stems. All different sizes will have a different application for each size stem. Just like the custom wood garage doors on a home the commercial size doors can have some extreme weight and will need more reinforcement from a longer stem to handle the extra weight of a 10-20 foot tall door. The extra long stems will give more reinforcement when the door is in the up position because all of the weight of the door rests on the rollers. And a commercial door can be up all day long. Commercial roller stem will also be made of hardened or tempered steel and zinc plated for high wind applications. You can get a similar hardened stem roller for your residential garage door. These are usually used for garage door that are in high wind locations. There should be enough information here to answer any questions you might have about roller stems to see if you might need something stronger for your garage door.
