What can be done to protect a garage door from a strong wind?

If a garage door is not correctly adjusted to fit flush up against the inside wall of garage then it will tend to move back and forth in the opening when it is closed. This will cause strong winds to rattle the garage door around and permit rain and debris to enter the garage.

Protect your garage door

The best solution to protect your garage door is to make sure it has a vinyl weather seal installed on the outside edges of the door opening. This will greatly decrease the effect wind and rain will have against the garage door. If you have a weather seal and the door still moves around when it is closed then it will most likely need to be adjusted by a professional door technician. Sometimes you will have to remove the weather seal and reinstall it so that it makes a tighter seal against the door panels to prevent any weather related door issues.

garage door opener unit attached to the garage door

When you have a garage door opener unit attached to the garage door and it is not fully closing the door down then the door will have some play and rattle in strong winds. When an opener is all the way down it should put some slight pressure pushing door tighter against the inside wall. Sometimes I have found in the past that just because there is no daylight showing thru the bottom of the door where it touches the floor doesn’t always mean the door is tightly sealed against the floor. The bottom seal on the door is 3-5 inches wide and can block sunlight but not fully seal door to the floor of the garage.

Any local garage door company can make all of these adjustments with a simple garage door tune up.
