History of Genie Garage Door Openers
Genie has been manufacturing garage door openers for many years and they are just as popular as Liftmaster garage door openers. The most popular Genie garage door opener is their screw drive model, which, in my estimate, covers maybe 40 percent of the residential garages in the United States. These screw drive garage door openers date back 25 to 30 years ago, and the older models are still functioning today because of the old saying: they don’t make them like they used to.
Longevity and Reliability
For example, I installed a brand new garage door yesterday, and the homeowner decided to keep his old Genie opener instead of buying a new one. This old Genie screw drive opener was still functioning properly, like the day it came out of the box, and did not make a whole lot of noise because it had always been properly lubricated. This opener was approximately 25 years old. About 10 to 15 years ago, the Genie company was bought out by Overhead Door Company. Therefore, if you have an opener with the Overhead Door logo stamped on it, it’s a Genie-manufactured garage door opener.
Diverse Product Offerings
Genie has also made an array of other products, including lifting mechanisms for construction, boom lifts, and radios—it’s a pretty big list. If you’re considering upgrading or maintaining your garage door system, knowing the history and variety of Genie products can be beneficial.
Programming Genie Intellicode Remotes
Overview of Programming Procedure
Instructions for programming Genie models equipped with Intellicode 2 remotes include several different models like the Genie SilentMax 1000 (model: 3042 belt drive), and others such as models 1022, 1024, 1042, 2022, 2024, and 2042. The Intellicode 2 security access remotes are compatible with these models.
Locating the Learn Button
The first step in programming is to locate your learn button. On these Genie models, it will be directly on the bottom of the opener unit. This will be a square button along with two triangular buttons right next to it. Additionally, these buttons will be accompanied by two LED lights—one long and skinny, and the other small and round—lighting up in blue or purple.
Step-by-Step Programming Instructions
Once you have located the learn button, press and hold it until both LED lights come on. Release the learn button and observe as the round blue LED comes on. Press and release the learn button again, and you should see the long skinny LED flash purple, indicating that the unit is ready to receive a new code.
Choosing the Desired Button
Now, on your handheld opener remote, if you have more than one button, select the button you want to activate the opener when you push it. After pressing and releasing the desired button, both LED lights should flash purple. Next, press and release that same button again; if both LED lights flash blue and then shut off, the code has been successfully accepted.
Final Testing
It’s crucial to test the remote button you programmed to ensure that it operates the garage door. If the opener unit starts functioning but the door does not open or close, ensure that the garage door opener is engaged to the door, as sometimes the emergency release may be disengaged. Occasionally, programming Genie garage door openers can be tricky, requiring multiple attempts to ensure it accepts the code.
Programming Intellicode Keypads
Functionality and Security
Programming Intellicode 1 and 2 wireless keypads involves similar steps. Again, you’ll begin by locating the learn button on the bottom of the opener unit. Remember, a secure four-digit PIN is essential; avoid using your address, as that’s the first thing a burglar may try.
Understanding the Process
After locating the learn button, press and hold it until both LED lights come on, then release the learn button. Now press and release it for the second time; the long skinny LED should flash purple, indicating readiness for a new code. Enter your desired PIN number and press and hold the up and down button (represented by two arrows) for at least one second, then release.
Confirmation Procedure
After pressing the button, you should see the long LED come on in purple. Press and hold the same button again, and upon releasing it, both LED lights should flash blue. Finally, press the up and down or open-close button again, and the opener unit should activate.
Final Steps
Wait about 30 seconds for the keypad to stop flashing or turn off the lights, then enter your four-digit PIN and press the open-close button. This process ensures your keypad operates effectively and securely.
By following the outlined steps, you can easily program your Genie garage door opener and keypad, ensuring smooth operation and enhancing your home’s security.
