Understanding Genie Garage Door Openers

Q: Why the Genie carriage is not lifting the door?

A: The most popular and widely sold Genie garage door openers are screw drive openers. Genie did not start manufacturing belt or chain drive openers until recently, which means there are numerous older screw drive Genie opener units still in use. A screw drive opener features an 8-foot long brass screw housed within the opener rail. The motor rotates this screw, which in turn drives the carriage—essentially a mechanism with teeth designed to engage with the screw.

How Do Screw Drive Openers Work?

To visualize, think of holding a bolt that you turn clockwise. As you do so, the attached nut (representing the carriage) moves to the right. Reverse the direction by turning the bolt counterclockwise, and the nut will move back to the left. This illustrates the basic principle of a screw drive system. In this setup, the carriage rides along the screw, enabling the garage door to open and close effectively.

Common Issues with Genie Screw Drive Openers

Over time, the carriages on Genie screw drive units can wear down, particularly the teeth that catch the threads of the screw. This wear prevents the carriage from moving back and forth along the screw, which is a frequent cause of malfunction in Genie screw drive openers. Fortunately, this issue is relatively inexpensive to fix, typically costing around $20-$25 for replacement parts.

Troubleshooting the Carriage Engagement

Before reaching out to a garage door technician, it’s essential to check if the carriage is engaged. Look for the red emergency pull cord: if it’s pulled down completely, the carriage is not engaged. You will need to pull it back up to re-engage the carriage. If the carriage is engaged and you still hear a loud grinding noise when the opener operates, this indicates that the carriage is worn out.

When to Call a Professional

If you’re experiencing issues with your Genie screw drive opener, you should not pay more than $125-$150 for a carriage replacement. However, if simple troubleshooting doesn’t resolve the issue, it may be time to call a professional garage door technician for further assistance.

Frequently Asked Questions

We receive many calls involving the safety eyes preventing the garage door from closing due to the safety eyes malfunctioning or simply being out of alignment. If your garage door opens fine, but will not close using the wall console, then this could be a safety eye issue. If the opener light flashes and/or the motor makes a clicking sound, this is a warning that you have a safety eye issue. You can begin by looking at the safety eyes themselves. You should see a steady light on both of the safety eyes. If one of the lights is flashing then you may just need to simply align the eyes properly. This is done by physically moving/adjusting the safety eyes until you have both safety eyes with a solid light showing.

If both safety eyes are showing a solid light, then you may have malfunctioning safety eyes.

A simple test is to press and hold the wall console to close the door. If the garage door closes while holding the wall console button, then you probably have a safety eye issue.
