Most garage door manufacturers use the same kind of hinges. There are some garage door manufacturers that use a different kind of hinge system. As far as I know there is three garage door manufacturers that use their own engineered hinge system. All the other manufacturers pretty much use the same basic garage door hinge and you can use these hinges interchangeable on any garage door that uses the basic kind of garage door hinge on about 80 to 90% of garage doors. Sometimes You can put a conventional garage door hinge on these other manufacturers Garage doors but sometimes it can be tricky. And sometimes garage door manufacturers will use their own engineered hinge systems on their residential garage doors but will use a conventional garage door hinge for their commercial garage door applications.
Known garage door hinges manufacturers
The four garage door manufacturers that I know of that use their own hinge systems are Amarr, Clopay, Wayne Dalton and Overhead Door brand. Clopay garage doors engineered their own hinge system about 10 years ago for a line of garage doors that they manufactured but they still had other models of garage doors that used conventional hinges. The hinges that this company manufactured for its garage doors did not work out very well so I do not know if they still use that system as far as I know they discontinued them. Amarr brand garage doors engineered their hinges about 10 to 15 years ago. This Hinge system is totally different than any other in the industry. They use a two piece Hinge on the sides of the garage door where the rollers will be and they use a different kind of hinge for the middle of the door. You cannot use these types of hinges with any other manufacturer but putting a conventional garage door hinge on these doors is possible but is very tricky and does not work very well at all. Overhead door brand garage doors always have use their own hinge system now in recent years they have come out with a new hinge system and they are made of plastic. And I have heard that these types of hinges have many problems I have only seen one and the door was six months old and the hinges were already starting to have problems so I don’t know if they still make these hinges but from what I’ve seen and heard they did not work very well either.
Wayne Dalton brand garage doors
The Wayne Dalton brand garage doors are a manufacturer that uses conventional hinges and their own hinge system on a model of one of their garage doors. These doors from Wayne Dalton that use a different hinge system then the conventional ones you cannot use conventional hinges on these garage doors it just doesn’t work there’s no way to do it. This is because of the way that the garage door is engineered. If you are going to replace your garage door hinges or have a broken one in need to replace it then you would need to replace the old hinge with the same kind of hinge.
