The battery backup option on a new opener are most commonly found on Liftmaster, Chamberlain of Craftsman brand openers. All manufactured by Chamberlain Co. Dont know if other brands are starting to offer this option yet but so far these brands are the first.

Openers with smart internal battery

These openers use a internal battery that can be removed and replaced. They will usually last about 5 years. This battery is constantly being charged and when the power goes out the opener will have enough power stored to open the door around 4 or 5 times without any power to the unit. Most of the time power outages happen in bad weather so having not to get out of your car to the elements you can access your garage with lighting from opener unit can give some safety and security when you have no power.Liftmaster 8550 Elite Series Opener - DC Battery Backup Belt Drive

Replacement batteries

The replacement batteries are not cheap don’t be surprised if you pay 75-150 dollars to replace battery from a local garage door co. They are pretty easy to replace and might find a replacement at major home improvement stores. The batteries that are manufactured by chamberlain come with a 1 year factory warranty. When the battery has lost its power life it will beep every 30 seconds until you remove it or replace it. I have had customers tell me that they have never had to use it and others swear by them and would always install an opener with the battery backup system. It’s nice to have in a power outage and most of the time doesn’t cost much extra to have this option.
