What is EZ set torsion springs?

The EZ-Set Torsion Springs are made by Clopay Building Materials. They are wound up by a socket on a drill. They are attached at the far left and right hand sides of the torsion tube instead of the middle of the door. These springs are easier to wind but the gearbox that allows you to wind them is difficult to install – especially if you have no experience in this area.

These springs are another attempt to try to make spring replacement less dangerous and easier for the do it yourself homeowner. But they are not that common of a spring assembly.

You will see this type of spring when homeowners buy do it yourself installation of garage doors from Home Depot or Lowes. They are not allowed to sell traditional torsion springs to the general public, for safety issues. Even though they are less dangerous to wind up there is still a level of danger with any torsion spring.

If your garage door has these types of torsion springs than I would suggest converting to traditional torsion springs because Clopay might stop manufacturing EZ set springs and you will have to convert anyway.
