Can I install a garage door opener myself?

Yes manufactures make openers that are designed to be installed by homeowners themselves. These are sold at the big home improvement retailers. They are not that easy to install so keep that in mind. If you are good at following instructions and have a little experience with these kind of appliances then you should be ok.

These home install units have a 9ft. rail that comes in pieces and have to be attached to each other. These opener rails are not as solid as a unit you would get from a local garage door co. This is because the 9ft. rail has to fit into a 3ft. box. Your ability to read and understand instructions will determine how long it takes you to install unit. Should be able to do it in less than a day but I have had customers tell me it took them 2-3 days.

I get calls all the time from customers who have attempted to install an opener himself and sometimes they get half way threw install and get confused and call me to finish install. Sometimes they open the box look at the directions and all the parts and don’t even attempt install. This will cost $100-$150.

Home install units tend to have better package deals that include accessories that you would have to pay extra for with a local garage door co. Like extra remotes, keyless entry and door monitors that let you know if your door is open from inside the home.
