I installed a do it yourself garage door opener on my one piece door. The top of the door hits the rail and won’t open door

There are two different ways that a one piece garage door will open up the first is the more common and that is for a regular amount of headroom that allows the top of the garage door to arc when it is opening. Other type of one piece garage door is made for low headroom you can determine this because these doors have two rollers one on the top left and one on the top right and they have a short piece of garage door track it goes straight back. what this does is it allows the one piece door to open up straight back without arcing into the garage because of low headroom or obstacles. The first example I just explained is this situation where you get the top of the one-piece garage door hitting the opener a rail and not allowing the door to move up any more. One piece garage doors like this will need more room to open then even a sectional roll up garage door this is just because of the way the hinges open the door and there is a trick to installing openers on these types of one piece garage doors. The way to properly solve this problem is to angle the opener rail and make sure that the front of the opener where is it screws into the wall is higher than where the motor head sits if you are looking at the opener from a side view then the opener will angle from the top of the ceiling in the garage down to where at the door meets the opener when the door is open and when you angle the opener in this way it allows the top of the garage door to arc and clear the rail as it continues to open.

garage door opener installation – angles

The amount of angle that you would have to use when you install the garage door opener varies from garage to garage so it might take a few times for you to get the right spot where the garage door does not hit the rail sometimes it can be a very extreme angle and sometimes it can be just a slight angle to solve this problem. If your garage has really tall ceilings and you have lots of headroom you most likely will not have to angle your garage door opener in this way because you can install the opener far enough above the garage door to wear when it opens it does not hit the rail when the door arcs. Please garage door is designed for a low headroom garage then you will also not have to angle the garage door opener send a low headroom door opens straight back and does not bark when it starts to open so you can just install the open air and rail level just as long as there is enough room above the garage door to fit the rail and Motorhead because there are some cases where there is sometimes absolutely no headroom for an opener. Another thing you have to keep in mind when you are installing an opener yourself is the hockey arm. This is the piece that connects from the door to the opener. They call it a hockey arm because it is shaped like one so it is hard to miss usually these hockey arms come in 2 pieces there is a straight piece and then a curved piece on one piece doors it is better to eliminate the curve piece and just use the straight bar and screw it to the very top of the garage door if it is wood this will make it easier for the opener to open and close the garage door.
