There are several different situations that will cause this to happen to your garage door. Sometimes it will be the opener and sometimes it could be the door itself. The first thing you have to do is determine whether it is the opener or the garage door. Easiest way to determine whether it is the garage door is to disengage the opener from the garage door this is done by pulling down on the red cord that hangs down from the opener carrier this is your emergency release it allows you to open your garage door manually in case of a problem or a power outage. On liftmaster or Craftsman garage doors it is a little different from a Genie garage door. On the liftmaster/ craftsman brand openers you will have to pull down and back to make sure that it is disengaged fully. Genie garage door opener you just have to pull down and then when you want to engage the opener to the door you would pull up and back. Okay now that you can open your garage door freely by hand up and down you want to make sure that the door goes down smoothly and if I get stuck a foot or two before it hits the floor then you know there is a problem with the garage door this is usually caused by rubbing on the door jamb or there is a problem with the garage door track when it gets to the bottom it does not want to close properly sometimes just lubricating the track in rollers will fix this problem if not then there needs to be adjustments  made and you will probably have to call a garage door technician to fix this.

The door rolls up and down properly all the way easily and smoothly then it is most likely the opener that is causing this problem. The first thing you want to do is to check and see if there is any rope or anything hanging from the bottom of the garage door that would cross be safety sensor beam when the door is closing and caused it to go back up. It could be as simple as that. I have seen people that have a lot of spider webs and leaves stuck to the spider webs that will cause this problem it could be as simple as that. Another problem is the bottom of the garage door track can come loose from the wall and when the garage door rollers are in that section of the bottom of the track if they are loose they will wiggle the sensors that are attached to the track usually only on Liftmaster and craftsman. Genie sensors are sometimes attached to the track but most of the time they are screwed straight into the wall so wiggling track will not affect them as much at all. There is too much tension on the spring system of your garage door when it is going towards the bottom and the opener does not have enough pressure to close the door it will automatically send the door back up thinking that there is a problem so sometimes you can just apply a little bit more pressure to be down limit and it can fix this problem. The solutions will correct the problem then you could have another internal problem in your garage door opener may be the limit assembly has gone bad or is not functioning properly these are things you would probably have to call a garage door technician to fix.
