What to do if my garage door rollers are making very loud noise?

If your rollers are making loud noises than most likely they will need to be lubed. Proper roller lubrication: Rollers should be lubed no more than twice a year. You can find the proper spray lube at any retail hardware store. If you have rollers with ball bearings than the bearings and the entire inside of the door track should also be lubed no matter what kind of rollers you have. If the rollers just needed to be lubed, than after proper lubrication you should disengage the door opener if you have one by pulling down on the red emergency release cord. You should now open and close the door manually until you can hear the noise disappear. You should open and close door at least 4 or 5 times. If the noise does not go away than the roller is beyond lubrication and will need to be replaced.

It is also possible that the roller is not causing the noise and might be the door track robbing metal on metal at some area on the door where it moves along the track. A small adjustment of the track can fix this problem. If the rollers are very deteriorated or rusty than you will need to replace them. If you are planning on replacing them yourself then anytime you have a broken roller you should replace it immediately. If you can’t hire a technician to replace all the rollers on your garage door then as long as the broken roller is not the 2 at the very bottom left and right hand side of the door they are pretty easy to replace. The 2 bottom rollers are attached to the bottom brackets that are attached to the torsion spring. Once you remove the screws that hold the brackets to the door than they can cause serious injury.

If the broken roller is not at the bottom of the door than you can easily replace the broken roller. You will have to find one at a hardware store. Especially if the roller is not turning when the door is going up or down, steel rollers will make the most noise because it is metal on metal friction.
