I have a broken roller, what should I do?

Anytime you have a broken roller you should replace it immediately. If you can’t hire a technician to replace all the rollers on your garage door then as long as the broken roller is not the 2 at the very bottom left and right hand side of the door they are pretty easy to replace. The 2 bottom rollers are attached to the bottom brackets that are attached to the torsion spring. Once you remove the screws that hold the brackets to the door than they can cause serious injury.

easily replace the broken roller

If the broken roller is not at the bottom of the door than you can easily replace the broken roller. You will have to find one at a hardware store. The most common size of residential roller is 2 inch. This is the only size replacement roller you will find at a hardware store. If your roller is bigger or smaller than 2 inches then you will probably have to call a technician or search the internet and wait for one to be shipped to you. The easiest way to determine roller size is to measure the width of the door track. It will either be 2 or 3 inch. They did make rollers smaller than 2 inch years ago but they are very rare to find. When you have a replacement roller or rollers then remove the door hinge that holds the broken roller, replace the old roller then put roller back into the track and put screws back in. Be careful not to over tighten the screws they strip out very easy so just snug them up.

These can cause big problems to a garage door especially if they are popping out of the track. If the rollers are so old and or rusty that the door doesn’t move up and down smoothly then it will wear out a garage door opener prematurely. Also the garage door track can make the rollers malfunction or break. If there is track that is not aligned correctly than plastic rollers can break apart real quick. The biggest problem with broken rollers is that the whole weight of the garage door is on the rollers when the door is up. And you don’t want the whole weight of the door on broken rollers. The door could come down in your garage. Rollers are an essential to the functionality of your garage door and the door opener.
