How to set the travel limits on a Genie opener?

Genie limits adjustments come two ways old and new. The both are night and day. One is mechanical and you will need a screwdriver or a ¼ inch socket or wrench to adjust up and down limits. The newer opener models are like most other manufactures that use buttons to adjust limit settings. To adjust the older models you will have to identify the limit switches. The switches are located along the opener rail. Some have a white or black plastic 2 ½  inch lever that hangs down and when the opener trolley hits the switch it will stop the door at that point.

Know each switch

Some models more recent don’t use a lever but a magnetic switch to stop a door at a certain point, both of these switches have a screw that tightens it to the rail. You will need to loosen this screw just enough to move the switch back and forth on the rail. Do not unscrew completely to keep from loosing screw. It is small and hard to find if you loose sight of it. The down limit will be in the front close to the garage opening. The up limit will be close to the motor head at the back. You will move the switch forward to close the door more or move back to stop the door from closing too much. The same applies to the up limit in the back. These switches have wires attached to them and run to the motor head. Make sure they are plugged in to the switch or the door will not receive signal to stop. These switches can malfunction so if they are not stopping the door they may need to be replaced.

Programming limits on a newer Genie model opener

This is a little bit easier. First find the programing buttons on the bottom of opener unit they are very visible. There will be 3 buttons and 2 LED lights one light is long and the other is small and round. To start press and hold the down or (-) button until you see a blue light starts flashing. Then hold down the down (-) button until door touches floor then release. Now press the square program button until the lights go off.

Now to set the up limit press and hold the up (+) button until you see a blue light. You should see the red LED light up. Press and hold up (+) button until door is all the way up. To finish press the square program button and both of the lights will flash and turn off. This means limit program is complete. Check by opening and closing once to test settings
