How to program a remote for Genie opener?

There are 2 different ways to program a Genie garage door opener. The older models use a Dip Switch type of receiver that uses a 9 or 12 position switch board. One on the unit itself and one in the remote. If your opener unit does not have a Dip Switch type receiver than it has a learn button and uses a rolling code type frequency. Rolling code means the remote sends a different code every time you push the button to open your garage door.

Dip Switch system

If you have a Dip Switch system than you have to flip the switches desired to the on position and match the same sequence on the dip switches on the remote. If you can not determine which is on or off then set the code on the opener unit then match on remote if it doesn’t activate the opener then just reverse every switch to oppose the last code that you entered. if it still doesn’t work then check to see if the battery is still good.

small LED light

If your unit has a learn button then it is usually located in front of the unit behind the light cover it is either black or white and there is a small LED light that will come on when you push the learn button. Once you press the learn button you have about 30 seconds to press the button on your remote to set codes. If it does not activate the opener when you push the button on the remote then press it again slowly as many times as it takes to get the opener to accept the code. If you cannot get the unit to accept the code then you either have a broken remote, bad battery,or the receiver board inside the unit is no longer functioning and one or all need to be replaced. The newer units sold within the last 5 years have a button marked learn and is pretty much procedure for programming remotes always follow instructions if you have them if not refer to genie.com
