The Right Gauge for Longevity in Garage Doors

Introduction to Garage Door Durability

When it comes to garage door sustainability, the gauge of the door can significantly impact its longevity. A well-constructed garage door will often come with an extended warranty, a key indicator of its expected lifespan. For those seeking a long-lasting solution, the choice of materials and construction quality plays a crucial role.

Understanding Wood vs. Steel Garage Doors

Custom carriage house doors, especially those made from high-quality wood, can outlast average garage doors. For steel garage doors, it’s advisable to opt for a minimum of a three-layer design or a steel back construction. Typically, two-inch thick steel back doors offer lifetime warranties, contributing to their appeal for long-term investment.

Coastal Location Considerations

If you reside in coastal regions of the United States, consider garage doors made from vinyl composites with insulated cores. These doors are highly durable, resistant to rust and rot, and often boast comprehensive warranties. While they might come with a higher upfront cost, the investment pays off over time, particularly in challenging weather conditions.

The Case for Aluminum Garage Doors

Aluminum garage doors are popular choices, especially for those looking at full-view or glass options. Constructed from commercial-grade material, these doors can last a long time with proper maintenance. Additionally, powder-coated tracks and hardware can increase the lifespan of steel components by 100% to 200%, making them ideal for coastal living.

Maintenance of Wooden Garage Doors

Wooden garage doors require significantly more maintenance than their steel or vinyl counterparts. While wooden doors can resist minor dents effectively, exposure to water can cause them to swell and become cumbersome. Maintaining these doors through regular upkeep in areas with high humidity is essential for extending their lifespan.

Impact of Climate on Garage Door Selection

In dry desert climates, all garage door materials perform well as they are less likely to rust or absorb moisture. However, in regions with high moisture levels, steel doors without adequate insulation, often referred to as pan doors, carry limited warranties, typically around five years. Ensuring regular maintenance and avoiding damage is essential for longevity.

Conclusion: Making an Informed Decision

In summary, choosing the right gauge and material for your garage door greatly influences its durability and lifespan. It’s important to consider factors such as coastal exposure, maintenance needs, and climate when making your decision. Always read the fine print of warranties to understand the limitations and ensure a wise investment in your garage door’s future.

Frequently Asked Questions

We receive many calls involving the safety eyes preventing the garage door from closing due to the safety eyes malfunctioning or simply being out of alignment. If your garage door opens fine, but will not close using the wall console, then this could be a safety eye issue. If the opener light flashes and/or the motor makes a clicking sound, this is a warning that you have a safety eye issue. You can begin by looking at the safety eyes themselves. You should see a steady light on both of the safety eyes. If one of the lights is flashing then you may just need to simply align the eyes properly. This is done by physically moving/adjusting the safety eyes until you have both safety eyes with a solid light showing.

If both safety eyes are showing a solid light, then you may have malfunctioning safety eyes.

A simple test is to press and hold the wall console to close the door. If the garage door closes while holding the wall console button, then you probably have a safety eye issue.
