Garage door won’t close in the morning. But will close at night?

Q: Garage door won’t close in the morning. But will close at night?

A: Garage door openers that use safety sensors (safety sensors: sensors located at the bottom corners of door that keep door from closing when door opening is obstructed.) are lined up so they can see each other

In all my years of repair service calls on openers the only time i have come across this problem is because bright early morning sunlight shining into the garage can interfere with the infrared beam created by safety sensors. So when night falls there is no light interference with sensors.

Genie manufactured openers seem to have this problem more than others. Most manufactures have solved this problem with there latest replacement sensors.

I have only come across this issue twice so its not very common. and if you don’t know what to look for it can make you pull hair out of your head.

To find out if its the sunlight that causes this problem. you can get two empty toilet paper rolls and tape over sensor lenses than if the door closes in sunlight theres your problem. You can also move safety sensors further into corners of garage away from sunlight making sure when moved that they line up to see each other. If there is no shady areas than replace sensors or use the paper rolls if needed.
