Genie opener won’t lift the door. What should I do?

Genie is a brand of garage door opener. They are now owned by Overhead Garage Door Company U.S. Genie has been around for decades and are among one of the first companies to manufacture residential garage door openers.

When your opener won’t lift the door first you have to make sure that the door is not the problem. Make sure the opener unit is plugged in. Also make sure the electrical outlet is not controlled by a wall switch or breaker has not popped. If you can disengage the opener Genie openerfrom the door and lift door manually than your opener has a malfunction. There are quite a few different reasons for malfunction. Here are some reasons, Burned out control board, Burned out capacitor, Disconnected or broken wall button wire, Broken wall button, Bad RPM Sensor, Worn out coupler, Burned out receiver board, Bag limit switch, Worn out trolley or carriage. Or pressure adjustment may be to low. Older models from 70’s 80’s and 90’s use a clutch system and they can wear out or fall apart.

Genie has stopped making replacement parts for their older openers

In the past few years Genie has stopped making replacement parts for their older openers so finding parts can be difficult. Also it’s against most all building codes and laws to repair openers that do not have safety beam sensors attached to bottom right and left side of door. So don’t be surprised if you have to replace opener unit.

In my years of experience

I have seen genie openers that just won’t die. The older the opener seems the longer they last. Now on the other hand since they have been bought out by Overhead Door Co., they are not as reliable as they use too. Also unplugging genie openers for 10 seconds can reset them. I have found that sometimes this is all that needs to be done to fix unit.
