How to program a Liftmaster Remote?

Liftmaster remotes come in 1,2,3 or 4 buttons and is one of the easiest to program. Liftmaster and Chamberlain also make universal remotes and keypads for most common opener brands. They also manufacture Craftsman openers for sears so all programming procedures are the same.

The first step to programming remotes

The first step is to find the learn button on the opener unit. Liftmaster and Craftsman openers come in several different assemblies. Some models have either one white plastic light cover or 2 covers. If they have 1 light cover it will always be in the front of the unit. If it has 2 light covers – they will either be in front and back or left and right side of the unit. The learn buttons also come in different colors. These different colors represent the age of the opener unit. The oldest units won’t have learn buttons

they will have what they call Dip Switches. Dip Switches use 8 to 12 small switches in a row that have an on or off position and the opener switches have to match the remotes switch positions to make remote communicate with the opener unit. The newer Frequency based remotes use a learn button that sends a signal to remotes to program codes. Learn button colors start with yellow for the oldest then green, orange, red and purple are the latest models. The older yellow and green learn buttons will be round and the other later color buttons will be square.

Locating the learn button

Locating the learn button will be easy. If you have only 1 light cover or the light is in the front than the learn button will be in the back of the unit unless you have A screw drive opener before 2000 the learn button will be behind a flip down access door on the right side of the unit where all your wiring attaches to the unit. Also if you have one light in front and back than the learn button will always be in the back. Just pull down on rear light cover to access learn button. If you have lights on either side of the unit than the learn button can be on either side of the unit. Just pull down both covers until you see the square learn button.

Push button and the LED Light will light up…

Once learn button is located all you have to push button and LED Light will light up for 30 seconds. Once LED is lit up press and hold the desired button on the remote until the opener unit clicks and flashes twice to let you know the code was received. When the opener has taken code push programmed button to test activation.
