My old one piece garage door is falling apart should I convert to a sectional roll up door?

first you will have to determine if you can convert to a sectional roll up garage door. If you live in a community that has a homeowners association, you will first need to check with them about replacing your garage door because they always have the final say unfortunately. The next step would be to find a garage door company of your choice and have them come out and give you an estimate on converting to a sectional roll up garage door do not expect them to give you an estimate over the phone on this situation because they will definitely have to come and inspect the garage to determine whether or not it is possible for a sectional roll up to fit in your garage. Most of the time you should be ok but there are some instances where it is pretty much impossible to install a sectional roll up garage door and that is probably the reason why you have a one piece garage door because sometimes that’s all you can install in some garages. What will determine whether or not you can convert to a sectional roll up door is what we call head room. This is the space or the distance between the top of your garage door opening and the first obstacle above the door whether it’s your ceiling or maybe sometimes people may have pipes running along their garage wall above the door and can make it almost impossible to install a sectional Garage Door.

less than 10 to 12 inches of headroom?

You will need about 10 to 12 inches of headroom above your garage door opening to successfully install a sectional roll up door. If you have less than 10 to 12 inches of headroom then you can use low headroom track to squeeze a door into tight spaces the minimum distance of headroom for using low headroom track is about 5 to 6 inches. I have installed garage doors with less than that but it is very time consuming difficult and you would definitely pay a little bit more. Some garage door company will not even attempt to install a sectional door with that little headroom but I have installed them with as little as 4 inches of headroom – it can be done. The other main factor to determine whether or not you can support a sectional garage door are support beams sometimes homes that have living areas above the garage especially homes with two stories there will be support beams in the garage that runs along the ceiling  and they are usually very big and in some cases they are about 5 feet to 6 feet back from the garage door opening so if you install a sectional garage door the track goes back into the garage about eight and a half feet so if the beam is less than 8 feet or so from the door then the door for track will hit the beam and make it very difficult to install the garage door and even more difficult to install a Garage Door Opener. If you measure from the garage floor to the bottom of a beam and it is more than 7 feet 6 inches from the floor you should be OK and you should probably be able to squeeze a sectional roll up garage door in your garage. If you find out that you cannot fit a sectional roll up garage door in your garage then you might have to be stuck with installing a one piece garage door.
