Is it ok to have a gap between the top panel and the wall?

Any gaps in the garage door to the door opening are either caused by minor damage to a top panel or a door was incorrectly installed. When a garage door is fully closed there shouldn’t be any daylight showing thru around the edges of the door. Garage doors are engineered to fit flush up against the inside wall of the garage. If you have climate seal installed around the outer edges of the outside opening of doorway there should never be any gaps in the door opening because climate seal is a 3 inch wide piece of vinyl with a flap that seals the door from the elements.

Wash your garage door with a garden hose

You should be able to wash your garage door with a garden hose without much if any water leaking into inside of the garage. Sometimes garage doors are installed without the weather seal and will have small gaps between the door and the wall. Doors install this way will make rattling sounds in heavy winds and leak water into garage.

top panel

If a gap in the top panel is created from damage to the top panel then it will probably need to be replaced. Most of the time this is caused by an opener trying to open a locked garage door or the springs have broken and the opener does the same thing because the door is too heavy.

In the past i have learned that you can try to straighten the panel out and put a new strut on the panel but it never fully fixes the gap so panel replacement is your best solution.
