Is it necessary to lube the springs?

Torsion springs rotate on a pole. These springs if installed and lubed correctly will not make much noise at all. If the do make noise its a rumbling sound as door goes up. This means the springs need to be lubed. Also when torsion springs are wound up the spring needs to stretch out about 2-3 inches. This keeps the wire that makes up the spring from rubbing together when spring rotates.

When I make service calls I always include with repairs lubing all moving parts of the garage door. Lubing springs is important to keep springs from making too much noise. Under lubed springs will create friction and make springs break prematurely.

Homeowners should lube all moving parts on garage door at least once a year. You can purchase garage door lube at any hardware store.
