My garage door is completely off track. Is it fixable?

Q: My garage door is completely off track. Is it fixable?

A: When a door has come out of track and is in the down position it will be easier to fix. But if it is crooked or come out of track in the up position than it can usually be fixed but is very tricky and tends to cost more.

Anytime doors come out of track, the rollers have worn down so much that the track no longer can hold them in. Other reasons can include track being hit by car or the edges of the track have opened up and also can’t hold rollers in place. Another symptom of door coming off track is that the door cables have jumped off cable drums (cable drums are in the upper right and left hand corners attached to the same pole as springs and cable winds up on them as door opens.) when this happens it will make door come out of the track and most of the time will make door crooked. Also a broken rollers will definitely make door pop out of track.

Roller replacement will keep door in track and keep it from coming out of track. You can also replace any damaged or bent track. Jumped cables need a technician to reset the door.

In my experience door coming out of track is a serious problem, especially if door is in up position. Believe me i have had doors fall on top of me when trying to put them back into position.

Whenever this problem is obvious then u should never try to operate door with opener or manually. This is work for technicians only. If door is stuck in the up position than calling a technician should be the first thing you should do so your garage isn’t open to the public.
