Is ⅓ HP garage door opener strong enough to lift two car garage door?

garage door third horsepower half horsepower and three quarter horse power motors. For a fact that liftmaster/ craftsman garage door openers are no longer being manufactured with a third horsepower motor they now only manufacture half horsepower and three quarter horsepower and now they use DC motors or direct current motors in their openers.  DC motors are very small in size compared to the older conventional electric motors used in garage door openers. 1/3 horsepower garage door opener is used to come as would they would call a contractor’s special in other words they are a little bit cheaper than a half horsepower opener for contractors that need a large sum of openness installed and maybe a track home edition and need to keep the cost low.

1/3rd horsepower garage door opener

1/3rd horsepower garage door opener should be able to open any garage door just as long as it is properly balanced in other words the torsion spring system or extension spring system that is used to counterbalance your garage door if it is in perfect balance you should be able to lift the door with two fingers so a third horsepower garage door opener should not have a problem lifting a two car garage door now if the garage door is not in perfect balance and is a bit heavier than a third horsepower opener might have to strain to open the door and also will wear out the internal plastic gears that drives the motor to open the garage door. As a really heavy custom wood garage door like a carriage house door then I probably would not recommend a third horsepower opener I would recommend that you go up to a three quarter horsepower garage door motor because even though a heavy solid wood door can be perfectly balanced it is still a bit heavy just because of the pure weight of the garage door. A three quarter horsepower garage door opener will last longer on a door of this type and also has a little bit longer factory warranty.
